[ARCHIVED] Endangered Species Day a Reminder to Get Out and Explore Nature in Riverside County

ENDANGERED SPECIES DAY 2021

Today is Endangered Species Day, which gives us a chance to think about all the work that has been done to protect species at risk of extinction. In the United States, there are approximately 1,300 species listed as endangered or threatened, and 287 of those live in California.
Within the Western Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (the largest conservation plan in the nation!), 11 species are considered endangered:
- Coastal California Gnatcatcher
- Least Bell’s Vireo
- Stephens’ Kangaroo Rat
- San Bernardino Kangaroo Rat
- Riverside Fairy Shrimp
- Quino Checkerspot Butterfly
- Arroyo Toad
- Southwestern Willow Flycatcher
- Western Yellow-Billed Cuckoo
- California Red-Legged Frog
- Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog
Would you like to learn more about endangered species in our area? Plan a trip to one of the RCA reserve areas to see landscapes, plants, and animals of Riverside County, like Diamond Valley Lake (featured in the image) or Sycamore Canyon.
